**I will add that I am thinking there is some update I'm missing that should have been installed before SP3 or even SP2? But since this thread was dated last month I figured they might tie together, all others I found were years old. The general fix for this problem is to download the standalone 'Internet Explorer 8' Setup from Microsoft manually using a modern day OS (with up2date certificates and crypto) and Computer and put it onto the hopefully virtualized XP, install it and most likely you can again run windows update. I know this should probably be a new thread. A malware scan is a good idea to start with. My own machine updates fine using the same modem and router. Reboot the system immediately when the installer requests a restart. Run the installer locally on your device and not from a network drive. It located the malware, quarantined it, but could not remove it. Updated definitions from Superantispyware and ran a scan. The only items in the INSTALLED PROGRAMS list are those two and WXP SP3. If you cannot disable any of the above, download and run the Malwarebytes for Windows version 4 offline installer. I installed a fresh copy of XP PRO on this 2nd hard drive and had the same exact problem. I had this problem with his hard drive, so I put in a "new" one.
